I'm gonna level with you here. There are sometimes clients that come along with a certain request, and you just know deep down it's going to be real dang hard to achieve what they want AND make it look good. Ocassionally it doesn't turn out to your satisfaction.

Unfortunately, extensions are not for everyone. Courtney found it too tempting to pick at, peel, and pull them out. Sad day. Also, so very bad for her hair. You can't pull out extensions without ripping out your own hair.

Chelsea and I put in Ali's Hothead Extensions today! I just keep getting more and more excited about these, and want to do them everyday! The transformation is incredible and the hair itself is uh.mazing.

Kaley has recently started student teaching and came in really wanting ombre highlights, but hesitated since she didn't want to cross any lines at work. So freaking glad I talked her into this.

Can't even tell you how grateful I am to have a skill I can do trades with. In exchange for Sammy's Halloween pics and our mini photo shoot, I transformed Ashley's hair to something new. Very new.

I used balayage to distribute very natural highlights and leave her roots looking deeper and darker.

My head about exploded reading all the comments Ash received on her blog when she revealed her new 'do.

After taking this first step, Ashley got more and more ballsy and decided she wanted to be a real ginger! It was also a good idea to refresh the color since we deposited onto her virgin, uncolored hair, which was very healthy and didn't absorb the color like most hair does, resulting in some fading.

Of course she brought donuts to our next appointment so I really whipped out my best work.

Most exciting thing for Ash was her new eyebrows! She always had them, o'course, but they were uber light.

And my favorite...the lips! Ahhh...the red lips!

Be still my heart!

Next step? Bangs! This girl just can't be stopped...bring on the change!

Attempt #1

So, I tried it.

Curling iron wand, that is. Left side: success. Right side: fail! How do you magicians do it??? Of course I forgot to photograph the failed side. Fail again.

I found, at least for the successful side, holding the curling wand point down worked best. Otherwise my arms get all twisted up. Is that even normal?

Again, I used the Kevin.Murphy comb to brush it out, and...thumbs up to the results.

I also felt too lazy to put on my winter things and leave the salon that night so I grabbed a mannequin head and played. A little curl here, a braid there. I made her super pretty.

We're Real Clients Too

We need our hairs done too!

Charisse from the salon helped me out with that a couple days ago.

In all my hair-doing years I've never used anything but Kadus or Redken on my hair, so when Charisse offered to do my hair using her color line, Schwarzkopf, I panicked just a bit. I find my hair to be a bit fickle and quite unpredictable, but Charisse assured me everything would be A-OK!

I wanted a more dramatic melt/ombre/cascade/meld color, so we formulated five colors, yup five. Talk about high maintenance!

We used a technique called Balayage, my new favorite thing to do, which doesn't fully saturate the hair, but rather sweeps the color onto the surface of the hair. We did this through the ends, so my old blondes were still somewhat there.

Charisse applied it as follows:

1/4" level four (dark, dark brown) warm chocolate

back combed at the line of demarcation (where she ended the color) to diffuse the color

3/4" level five (dark brown) warm chocolate

back combed at the line of demarcation

1" level six (brown) warm chocolate

back combed at the line of demarcation

Balayaged from line of demarcation with bleach in the back where my natural color still was

Balayaged from line of demarcation with level 10 in the front

Balayaged with bleach intermittently to brighten, specifically around my face.

Smudged a few of the bleached ends to fully saturate the color right at the tips

Balayage is typically used to transform hair to a more natural looking color pattern. Natural hair = deeper and darker at the roots; lighter and brighter at the ends, making this the ideal technique for the new hair color rage, ombre. Of course I had to be part of the rage...I just wanted to be like the cool kids. Ok?

I Can't Stress This Enough

Washing your hair everyday is NOT a necessity. In fact, washing your hair everyday isn't healthy for your hair. It's very drying. By washing your hair daily you are stripping it of it's natural oils, and your scalp begins to overcompensate and produces extra oil to counteract the drying.

Your scalp can adjust to an every other day shampoo, but it will take time. The first couple weeks won't be your prettiest, but after you've overcome the transition, your life will have changed. Changed, I tell you.

The key to this new life you'll lead is DRY SHAMPOO. When I discovered this it was as if the clouds opened up and the hair gods said, "It's about freaking time, and you'll never be the same. Now go forth and spread the word". And I'm trying.

I'm not only a never-wash-daily kind of girl, I'm a never-wash-more-than-once-a-week kind of girl. I may have been known to go 11 days in the past. Just one time. But, I can't say I wouldn't do it again!

My shampooing schedule typically goes as such:

Day One: Clean hair, no need for dry shampoo. Occasionally I'll tap in some Powder.Puff to give it some texture. I hate the feeling of soft, clean hair.

Day Two: With my scalp being well adjusted to once a week shampoos, I am not in need of dry shampoo yet.

Day Three: Flat-iron-curl my hair to give it body and texture. Lightly spray dry shampoo throughout my roots that evening, always avoiding my part and hairline. Leave it for 2-5 minutes then brush through with a paddle brush, distrubuting the product through the ends.

Day Four: After curling my hair on day three, it only needs some fluffing. No need to touch it with any hot tools, just a bit of Powder.Puff. Lightly spray roots again with dry shampoo and brush through.

Day Five: Bend the roots a little with the flat iron to encourage curl and volume. Maybe pin back my bangs or pull it up for part of the day. Really attack my roots with dry shampoo in horizontal and then vertical sections near my hairline. Brush through.

Day Six: Ocassionaly spray more dry shampoo lightly around my head, and brush through. Flip my head over and spray Brocato Back to the Beach throughout. Amazing texturizing mist that holds the volume I've created with the dry shampoo, and encourages curl and texture.

Day Seven: Back to the Beach spray is really hard to brush out, so I don't bother touching it. Maybe pin back my bangs, the sides, or even all of it. The beach spray also allows incredible hold if I want to put my hair in a side braid or a messy bobby pinned bun.

Over the years I've tried a number of dry shampoos and my all-time favorite has definitely surprised me. Pssst! It's the first one I ever tried, and continues to remain at the top of my list. I purchase it at Wal-Mart, Walgreens or Rite Aid, and at $6.99 it can't be beat!

Super lightweight amazingness with a light, fresh scent. Also adds a little volume by creating bulk at your roots.

If you're looking for a fresher smelling dry shampoo, I've enjoyed Big Easy by Brocato, which we sell at the salon.

We also sell this one at the salon, and it smells amazing! It absolutely masks that dirty hair smell.

The downfall is that it's about triple what my beloved Pssst costs.

Curl Tips

I've had a firm testimony of flat iron curls up until last week when I performed Operation New Years Eve Curl on two clients. I used a one inch curling iron wand (no spring makes it a wand), and took large sections, and wrapped around the wand. The high heat setting of the wand created fairly tight ringlets (pictures would be helpful right about now, but I'm a fool and didn't take any) in just a few seconds, which I assured both clients would not be the final result.

After curling the whole head, which took about 20 minutes, I grabbed my magic Kevin.Murphy comb, and brushed the crap out of it. Gasp! You brushed curls? You bet I did, and the result was incredible. One client reported back that her husband called it [warning, PG13] "sex hair". Who doesn't want that while ringing in the new year?

I WILL do this again, and take pictures to prove it's beautiness. Yes, that's a word. As of today.

The finishing touches were made by dusting my favorite Kevin Murphy product, Powder.Puff, all over the flipped-over-head. Powder.Puff is essentially a volumizing powder. Genius right? We're always working to create volume, but using product that add at least a little weight. But this powder creates incredible oomph and texture without the weight!

What's Kevin.Murphy, you might ask. Well, it's a new line we carry, which I believe isn't sold in any other salons in Provo. To be honest, I am not a huge fan of their shampoos and conditioners, but I am a big fan of a few of their styling products, namely the Powder.Puff.

Ahh, and then there is their comb. Ah, the comb of all combs. It is true that we hair stylists get excited over combs, clips and even bowls, but this excitement of mine is legit. The carbon fiber make of the comb allows for hold and texture without frizz. You can actually tame curl (hence my combing of the New Years Eve curl) by combing through it!

Magic comb, and one inch curling iron, although not the one used on above-mentioned clients.

However, this curling iron, called a Marcel, is one of my favorites. It allows you to rotate the iron after clamping the hair (or holding the hair around the wand), so as to help you wrap the strand.

Another little secret about this miracle product...it helped in lengthening my time between washes, along with my trusty dry shampoo. BONUS!

Although I loved the result of these curls on my clients, I find using a flat iron on myself to curl is much easier. However, I'll give this a try, and report back!

What a poor excuse for a hairstylist I am...can't even curl her own hair with a curling iron!

This post is much, too much overdue...I've been a bad little blogger (slap on the wrists, administered).

Here we have Morgan, a dear friend of mine, whom I coincidentally met via this very blog, via my sister, who graciously posted about me long ago. Long enough sentence?

Morgan decided she needed to lose some length. And by some, I mean tons. Plus she has the heaviest hair ever, so who wouldn't want to lose a couple pounds in an hour?

Pure Finishing

My awesome salon sent me and a few other stylists up to SLC for a Pureology class focused on product knowledge and "finish work", which is Pureology's term for up-do's.

The class was extremely informative, so much fun, and successful...in terms of the finishing part.

My chignon! Isn't she perty!?

Such a neat way to cover up the ponytail holder: separate a section of hair above the ear to overdirect and wrap around the ponytail, securing it with a bobby pin (or "fastener" as Pureology calls it).

Two sweet pincurls secured with loose fasteners (hair pins). Surprisingly simple!

I was so inspired by this look that I incorporated it a little into a lil' photo shoot I was in.

Up-do's are not my thing.

Truthfully, they scare the hell out of me. However, Candice is a good friend of mine and her hairstylist backed out at the last minute for her bridal up-do...so, what's a girl like me to do?

Candice requested more of a "down-do", which I feel mostly comfortable doing. It's the all-pinned-up-to-perfection that I feel so uncomfortable doing.

(Hopefully, that is to change, as I am attending an all day Pureology class on Monday with an emphasis on up-do's. Yikes!)

Lydia felt like she needed an updated cut and style. We needed something with ease, volume and yet, still, moveable.

I'm so excited that my skeelz impressed Cait to the point of scheduling her first appointment in a salon...with me! Up until now her mom (that's right, the lovely lady pictured above) has been cutting her hair, and she's never colored it!

This last Saturday I did the unthinkable. Megan had talked about doing this before, but I honestly never thought she'd REALLY do it. Well, at least not in the next 100 years.

I guess Saturday was a special day. A day to please husbands, for hers has wanted this for as long as I can remember.

Molly had black hair, layers of it. A soap cap was our best option (basically a bleach shampoo), since I have sworn off color removers.

Disaster turned Desirable

I may regret posting this, seeing as how I just posted a hair blunder not too long ago, but I have to say this one could be worth it.

Ang wanted some red panels in her hair, something a sort of cranberry shade. "Aha" I thought to myself, "a 6/44 should do the trick"! The same 6/44, I might add, that turned MegRomo's hair purple for her wedding.

Well guess what we ended up with? That's right folks...VIOLET.

A few short days later, I couldn't force her to walk around like that for long, we stripped that violet like a bra from a new bride!

What a fantastic color, and all it took was two hair appointments!

I do love my sister, don't get me wrong. But GOSH I dislike her hair. (Again Megan, I loooove you) Her hair and me, we don't get along so well.

Well sure, we're fine and dandy if we want to color her hair the same way everytime. But who wants that! Anytime we are taking her lighter, or redder or something of the like, we have big problems. Problems that I would not like to disclose. A little sensitive inside, I'm sure you know how it goes.

However, I'm not afraid to admit my flaws, we all must come to terms with them.

My friends, have you come to terms with yours?

I believe this is after process #3. Don't judge me.

Immediately following the final fix-up Megan had to run to Justin Hackworth's studio for his 30 Strangers project with mi madre, which I later joined with my sisters.

You must admit her hair turned out fantastically well. So I guess we mended ways, her hair and I. Bravo!

We took Kecia from blonde bombshell to brunette beauty about six months ago. And as time has told us many times before she ended up needing to freshen up her color and cut, who knew!

7 months pregnant and needing a change...hmmm, I've heard this before! It seemed lightening her luxuriously fantastic hair with blondes, gold and copper seemed to do the trick until she decided she needed MORE blonde. You can't ever please those heavy with child, can ya?

Reality: corrections/additions happen. She just needed some more drastic pieces, hence the need for more blonde. (Added Sunday during a nice get-together with Marie and husband, Pete)

Are you included in the .1% of the human population that washes their hair daily and wishes they didn't have to? Ugh, I'm beginning to sound like an infomercial...

In a nut shell, I don't wash my hair everyday and neither should you (Lindsey, you included). I've discovered dry shampoo helps me in my dirty deed, whether it's second day hair or sixth day hair (yes, you read that correctly).

Many a dry shampoo has been tested in my bathroom (mainly the three below), and not-a-one compares to my first dry shampoo purchase, Pssst!

Whether you are looking to pump up your volume on a daily basis, or cleaning those roots often this is an incredible product and one of my top 10 products I can't live without, another being Neosporin. Can't tell you how much I love that stuff.

Pssst can be found online or at your local Walgreens or Rite Aid. Go get it. Let me know your thoughts!

A common process in the salon... Fall/Winter is approaching and many clients desire a darker hue. Marie was one such client this season.

The problem with dear Marie is within a couple months time she'll want to be blonde again, or maybe even her natural color. So I have to be very careful how much chemical processing is done on her hair with each service so it maintains it's healthy lustrous shine, and strong unbreakable ends.

Meese and I have been friends since we were about 4 (correct me if I'm wrong, Ma). Imagine the two most rambunctious rascals, and you've almost summed up the sort of trouble we used to get into.

I've had the pleasure of cutting Marisa's hair for the past year or so; always a treat! This last time she visited my chair she was definitely in a daring mood!

The last cut we did on her was a jaw length a-line bob, which was a big step for her, so I never imagined she'd bring in a picture of Sienna Miller's short hair from a year or so ago. I was so stoked! Enjoy!

If there is one thing I know my way around, it's definitely the A-line, and I'm not shy about it. Stacked, short, collar-length, chin-length, you name it, and I'm your gal.

The toughest cut to learn in hair school, and I was forced to snip it over and over and OVER. And I have a theory as to why; my hair was cut into that perfect A-line. This may shock you, but clients constantly want your exact same hair, and it seems they never consider YOU actually didn't cut it yourself (although heaven knows I wish I could).
My second greatest learning tool...my loyal client and sister. Traveling to see me every 6-8 weeks, and allowing me consistent practice in A-lining.

The Mal Pal has set up a second home at my saloon, which is a-OK with me, I truly enjoy her company. If only my other local sissies would come around more often (HINT HINT).

With Mal's frequent visits to the salon it only makes sense that we'd be prettying up her hair more often. Only a few weeks after lightening her red in hopes to eliminate her red, she decided to go darker again. Seriously dude? Love her, but seriously???

I darkened her on Sunday, and due to some color malfunctions (let's be honest people, it happens to the best of us), we RE-lightened her on Monday.

This time around I stripped her hair with a new color remover, Rusk Eliminate, hoping it yielded better results than my previous go-to remover, Pravana. I feel like I've discovered a gold mine, that color remover is frackin' amazing (Bears, Beets and Battlestar Galactica).

Let me set the scene...

It's Thursday evening, and Bree arrives to touch up her color, her wedding to sweetheart, Johnny, is on Saturday. She timidly spills her bad news.

"Cat, my hairstylist cancelled on me, she can't drive up from Vegas to up-do me. Would you be able to?"

I came to moments later, and see Bree waiving an open color tube inches from my nose, unleashing it's potent smell to revive me...fine, I didn't faint.

There was no time to practice Bree's hair, and I didn't want to be the reason for a botched wedding 'do! (Not that I can't do it, but I need practice, practice, practice.)

Short story, short...I did do her 'do early Saturday morning, but dang that soft, fine hair of hers, for it didn't last the WHOLE day. Luckily my sissy, Mal, was there to pin and primp throughout the day.

No matter what, Bree never looked more beautiful!

Some of my favorite clients are wee ones. You're probably thinking, "Little kids, big whoop. Easy peasy." Wrong-o. Besides the fact that lil' kids hair is very fine, cowlick-y, and sometimes unruly, you'd be shocked to hear that kids move A LOT, refusing to sit still. Sensing my sarcasm? I hope.

Really though, kids are funny. Rylee's grandma asked her teasingly, "Where did you get your pretty blonde hair?" Rylee replied in a matter-of-fact way, "Cousin Caitlyn."

Meet Angela.

She came to me by way of Mary Kate, sorta.

Here's the connection: Angela {Washburn Motors employee}, Steve Washburn {Mary Kate's brother in law}, Melissa Washburn {Mary's sister, old client of mine when Mary was in Idaho} Dear Melissa referred Angela to me when she had just moved here.

Angela's hair has been long ALL her life, no joke. Above is the result of one of our past appointments. Although you can't see the full length, it's about midway down her back.

Below: the finished product! I'm pretty dizamn proud of myself for this one.
